Bringing data clarity to a complex retail environment

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Over the last 30 years, McDonald’s UK&I had adapted to the demanding needs of their business by implementing various new technologies and systems. With the exponential growth of delivery ordering in particular, this meant that multiple new systems had been introduced into the already complex McDonald’s architectural landscape.

THE CHALLENGE

Due to their increased growth, McDonald’s no longer had a complete view of which systems were used across their data landscape and which data was being sent to and from individual systems. The information was there but often segmented within individual teams with sporadic documentation.

In addition, a number of new joiners to the data team meant that it was an ideal time to consider how data worked with the rest of the business and whether the right projects were being prioritised.

THE ENFUSE APPROACH

Our Data Consultants undertook an initial 12-week piece of work to clearly map out a set of deliverables; a Data Relationship Diagram, Lineages Diagrams and a Data Catalogue for 5 key areas at McDonald’s. The approach began with identifying a stakeholder map in collaboration with McDonald’s so that the right parties could be involved.

A total of 59 stakeholders were consulted throughout the period and our consultants expertly extracted information from individuals or from out-of-date documentation to create their deliverables from scratch.

During the project, the team regularly replayed what they had gathered to stakeholder groups to verify their findings.

THE OUTCOMES

The team produced a data relationship diagram that had 300 systems mapped out, a catalogue containing over 600 data flows, an extensive list of SMEs and a set of data lineage diagrams. During stakeholder consultations, the team also gathered key risks and anecdotal information to provide McDonald’s with a set of 44 recommendations and a roadmap for achieving the recommendations.

As part of our commitment to building capability, not dependency, we also trained the McDonald’s data team on the tools and techniques required to undertake the project and left the team with an extensive manual.

The client now had, for the first time, a holistic view of their data landscape that they could use at project initiation to ensure that all downstream systems were being considered during technical projects.

“…the team successfully delivered an outstanding piece of work, providing McDonald's with a level of visibility across their data systems and processes that had never been achieved before, with outputs including artefacts that McDonald's could continue to develop and maintain internally.

From the outset of the engagement the entire team were professional, friendly and enthusiastic - all of which made it an absolute pleasure to work with them. The tenacity and perseverance displayed was exemplary, as often the timelines were extremely tight and a huge number of stakeholders needed to be engaged in order to complete the task…overall it was a hugely collaborative project with the Enfuse team, and from both the success and positivity of the project I would have no hesitation in working with the same team in the future.”
